Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is prepared by taking a small sample of your own blood and spinning it in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets, which carry growth factors involved in tissue repair. The concentrate is then injected into the scalp or skin. PRP is most often discussed for pattern hair loss, where several studies suggest it may improve hair density in some patients, and it is also used for skin quality and alongside microneedling. Preparation methods differ between systems, which partly explains why study results vary, and it does not work for every type of hair loss. Because hair loss has many causes, a diagnosis comes first. Suitability is decided after assessment by Dr. Areej Albisher, and results vary.

What to expect, recovery and risks
A blood sample is taken and processed during the visit, then injected through fine needles; the scalp may feel sore and tender for a day or two, and bruising, swelling or temporary headache can occur. Because your own blood is used, allergy is unlikely, but infection and injection-site reactions are possible. PRP may not be suitable with certain blood or platelet disorders, active infection, some medicines or cancer history. A course of several monthly sessions is common, followed by review and possible maintenance.
Common questions
Does PRP work for all hair loss?
No. It is most studied in pattern hair loss and responses vary. Some types of hair loss need different treatment, so a diagnosis is made first.
When might hair changes be noticed?
Hair grows slowly, so any change is usually assessed after a few months, using photographs or scalp examination for comparison.
Can PRP be combined with other hair treatments?
It is often used alongside other medically prescribed treatments rather than instead of them. The combination depends on diagnosis.
