Topical Dutasteride with Dermapen Microneedling
Dutasteride is a medicine that reduces the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone involved in pattern hair loss. In this treatment it is not taken by mouth and not injected into the scalp. Instead, Dr. Areej Albisher performs Dermapen microneedling on the affected scalp and dutasteride is applied topically to the skin surface, with the aim of supporting its delivery locally. It is considered only for selected adults with androgenetic (pattern) hair loss after a full hair assessment, which may include trichoscopy and blood tests, because other causes of hair loss need different treatment. Published research, including a randomised study comparing microneedling with topical dutasteride, suggests potential benefit, but the evidence is still limited and evolving, studies are small, and results vary between people. It is not suitable for everyone and no regrowth is guaranteed.

Who may be considered, and important precautions
Suitability is decided only after Dr. Areej Albisher has confirmed the type of hair loss and reviewed your medical history and current medicines. Dutasteride can be absorbed into the body and may cause medication side effects such as reduced libido, erectile or ejaculatory changes, breast tenderness or mood changes, and it can lower PSA blood levels, which matters for prostate screening. It is not used in pregnancy, in people who may become pregnant without a medical discussion, or while trying to conceive, because it can affect the development of a male foetus; people who are pregnant should avoid handling it. Partners trying to conceive should raise this before treatment. This treatment requires medical supervision and should not be attempted at home.
What to expect, recovery and risks
A numbing cream may be applied before microneedling. Scalp redness, tenderness, pinpoint bleeding and mild swelling are expected and usually settle within a few days. Risks include local irritation, itching, infection, folliculitis, temporary shedding and, rarely, scarring or allergic reaction to applied products, in addition to the possible systemic medication effects described above. Sessions are planned as a course with reviews of progress using photographs; any change is gradual and typically assessed over several months. Treatment may be combined with or compared against other established options.
Common questions
Is this the same as taking dutasteride tablets?
No. Here dutasteride is applied topically to the scalp alongside Dermapen microneedling; it is not taken by mouth or injected. Some absorption into the body is still possible, so precautions still apply.
Will it work for me?
It may help some people with pattern hair loss, but evidence is limited and results vary. It is not appropriate for other causes of hair loss, which is why diagnosis comes first.
Can I use it if I am trying to have a baby?
Pregnancy, possible pregnancy and trying to conceive must be discussed before treatment. Dutasteride is avoided in pregnancy and should not be handled by pregnant people.
