Botox / Botulinum Toxin Injections
Botox / botulinum toxin injections are a medical treatment in which very small quantities of a purified botulinum toxin preparation are placed into selected facial muscles. The injection temporarily reduces the activity of the treated muscle, which may soften the appearance of dynamic expression lines — the lines that appear with movement such as frowning or smiling. Botulinum toxin may also be used for selected functional concerns when medically appropriate and locally approved. The effect is temporary and gradually wears off, so it does not remove wrinkles permanently. The injection pattern, dose and treated muscles are planned individually by Dr. Areej Albisher after facial assessment and a review of your medical history. Suitability, the degree of change and how long any effect lasts vary between patients.

Botulinum toxin brands
"Botox" is often used as a general term, but it is one brand (onabotulinumtoxinA, by Allergan). Other botulinum toxin type A products include Dysport (abobotulinumtoxinA), Xeomin (incobotulinumtoxinA), Nabota (prabotulinumtoxinA) and Relfydess (relabotulinumtoxinA), a ready-to-use liquid formulation. The products are not interchangeable unit-for-unit, and they differ in formulation, approved indications and availability between countries. The product, dose and pattern are chosen after assessment, and you will be told which product is used. Possible side effects include bruising, headache and, uncommonly, temporary drooping of the brow or eyelid or an asymmetric expression; treatment is avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding and with certain neuromuscular conditions.
Common questions
Is there downtime?
Most patients return to usual activities soon afterwards. Small marks, mild redness, tenderness or temporary swelling at the injection points may occur and generally settle over hours to a few days; experiences vary.
When may results become visible?
Any softening usually develops over several days, with the fullest effect typically assessed around two weeks after treatment. The degree of change varies and no specific outcome can be promised.
How many sessions may be recommended?
The effect is temporary, so treatment is generally repeated over time after review. The interval and number of sessions depend on individual assessment, the muscles treated and how you respond.
